The tired soldier, out of breath, approached the kind nun. “Please,” he begged, “may I hide under your skirt? I’ll explain everything later.” The nun, with a compassionate heart, agreed.
A moment later, two gendarmes burst in, their voices urgent. “Sister,” they asked, “did you see a soldier running in this direction?”
The nun, remaining calm, replied, “He went that way.” As the gendarmes hurried away, the soldier cautiously emerged from beneath her skirt. “Sister,” he expressed his gratitude, “I can’t thank you enough. You see, I desperately wanted to avoid being sent to the front.”
