We laugh about it among friends, we half-admit it, sometimes we even claim it as a small “eco-friendly” gesture. However, peeing in the shower could well have more disadvantages than we think. Hygiene, pipes, self-image… what if we took stock of this reflex that we think is harmless but which deserves a little spotlight?
Hygiene: Is this shower really clean?

Let’s be honest: the shower is our little cocoon of cleanliness. We soap ourselves up there, we relax there, we recharge our batteries there. So is peeing in it really compatible with this quest for freshness? Not quite. Sure, urine is sterile when it leaves the body, but as soon as it touches the air and surfaces, it becomes an ideal playground for bacteria and fungi. Hello little microbes in an already very humid environment!
What if you have a small cut or irritation on your skin? This can make it easier for these unwanted microorganisms to enter. In short, not great for your skin’s well-being…
Pipes vs. Pee: A Draw

Plumbing isn’t ideal either. Urine contains minerals like calcium and magnesium. Combined with soap or hair product residue, this can form deposits that gradually clog your pipes .
The result: blockages, slower water drainage, and eventually… a plumber to call (and pay!). Saving a little on toilet paper today, for a hefty bill tomorrow? Not sure it’s worth it…
Living together: a question of respect

When you live alone, you can sometimes allow yourself a few liberties. But in a shared bathroom, this gesture can quickly be frowned upon. Imagine the reaction of your roommate, your spouse, or your children when they learn that you have this little ritual in the shower…
This may seem trivial, but it touches on very sensitive notions such as respect for common space and the image we project of ourselves . After all, taking care of yourself also means taking care of others.
Mental side: don’t trivialize
Another point we don’t often think about: the effects on our habits. A small breach in hygiene here, a carelessness there… and hey presto, our well-oiled routines can suffer. Peeing in the shower may seem trivial, but it’s also a way of sending our brain the message that periods aren’t that important.
And this can, little by little, impact our rigor in other areas of daily hygiene, such as washing our hands regularly or maintaining our bathroom.
The right reflexes to adopt instead
Don’t panic, there are simple and effective solutions to avoid this little morning temptation:
- Plan ahead : a quick detour to the bathroom before heading into the shower, and hey presto, the problem is solved!
- Make the most of your time : while the water is heating, take advantage of it to satisfy your natural needs.
- Use visual reminders : a sweet note stuck on the mirror can be enough to reprogram your brain towards better habits.
Because feeling good about yourself also starts with small everyday actions.
