Vicious ATM scams: all it takes is a few seconds of inattention to get scammed!

ATM Distraction Scams
In some cases, scammers don’t need any technology. They rely on confusion. While you’re withdrawing money, someone calls out to you, feigning some sort of problem (a bill dropped, a question about the machine, or being deliberately agitated). The goal is to distract you for a few seconds. During this brief moment, an accomplice steals the card or any bills already taken out. This method requires precise coordination between the criminals, but it works remarkably well. It’s therefore crucial to never lose sight of your card, your money, or the ATM screen. If you experience suspicious behavior or an attempt to approach, cut them off immediately and keep your distance.

Card trapping aided by psychological pressure
Another method aims to deliberately block the card in the ATM. The scammer, posted nearby, then intervenes under the guise of helping or tries to distract you. Their goal is to observe your PIN before retrieving the card themselves as soon as you leave. In these cases, it is essential to never leave the ATM without blocking it, even if your card appears to have been swallowed. Calling the bank via the number on the ATM (and not on a dubious sticker) allows for quick action. This scam plays on the effect of panic and embarrassment. Remaining calm, refusing any outside assistance, and systematically hiding your hand when entering the PIN can thwart these attempts.
