Comfrey, a plant that grows in damp meadows and ditches near bodies of water, has been used by herbalists for centuries. It is characterized by a turnip-like root and large, hairy leaves. Studies demonstrate its effectiveness in treating various types of pain, including back pain, when taken as a gel. It is particularly helpful for joint problems associated with osteoarthritis. A study of 120 people with upper or lower back pain showed that an ointment made from comfrey root extract significantly reduced pain within just five days. This study, conducted by the German Sport University Bonn and published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, highlights the effective, clinically proven effect of comfrey root extract for acute pain relief.
