- Start by gently removing and cleaning the avocado pit, i.e. the seeds. Make sure you don’t wash the thin brown skin around it, just the luscious residue.
- Some avocado seeds are elongated in shape, while others are near-perfect spheres, but they all have a lower end (from which the roots develop) and an upper end (from which the sprout will grow). The slightly pointed one is the upper one and the flat one is the lower one.
- Take four toothpicks and insert them (half a cm deep) into the pit, distributing them evenly along the circumference of the avocado. Fill a glass with water and put the seed in it. The toothpicks that serve as a support should keep the seed afloat on the rim of a glass, while the flat part of the seed will remain submerged in water.
- The next step will be to arm yourself with patience because, from experience, we tell you that it will take at least 8/9 weeks before you see the first roots. But don’t forget to change the water at least once a week to avoid the proliferation of fungi and bacteria. Also choose a clear glass so you can see the roots of your avocado grow.
- After this period of time, the roots will continue to grow and branch until a small shoot appears at the top.
- When the shoot is 10-15 centimeters, cut it in half to half height to encourage further growth in the future. When it measures 15 centimeters again, it is ready to be buried in a pot with humus-rich soil, leaving the top of the seed slightly uncovered. Never forget to put it in very sunny places!
- On the other hand, you need to make sure that you water your avocado frequently, so that the soil is always moist. But don’t overdo it. If yellowing leaves appear, it’s a sign that you’re giving them too much water.
- When you see that the bud is already a foot long, it’s time to prune the leaves to encourage the growth of a thick canopy. Repeat when you have reached this height again.
- In hot weather, you can leave the avocado outdoors, but during cold weather, store it in a place in your home where it stays warm.
Planting avocados is something really simple, so thanks to having your own plant of this fruit, you can have guacamole or any other recipe made with avocados throughout the year. We recommend this, a delicious avocado cake.
