How to decorate your garden on the cheap: 7 DIY ideas for creative recycling

Creative recycling of fruit crates

Especially if you regularly shop at the market or at a small producer who sells fruit and vegetables retail, you’ll find your garage full of  plastic crates . Considering that plastic is one of the most polluting materials, try giving it a second chance before tossing it in the bin. Cut away the longest side of the crate to create an opening. Then pad the bottom and the remaining long side with cushions. You’ve just made  a little armchair ! You can prop it up against a wall, if you have one in your garden, or add a couple of tires under the crate, like you would with a coffee table.

Creative recycling with pallets

Pallets  ,  or wooden pallets from workshops and warehouses, are a popular material for  DIY  and craft projects because they’re versatile and easy to assemble, like building blocks for new shapes. A  pallet sofa , in particular, is a beautiful piece of furniture,  eco-friendly, affordable, and very comfortable.  It doesn’t matter how old they are: sanding them will make them look like new again.

Creative recycling of boots

We could also call them “vase-boots.” If you have some  old leggings , fill them with soil and plant some flowers: they will embellish and color the garden and courtyard in a rustic and very original way.

Creative recycling of cement

If you have some concrete elements left over   from the renovation, decorate them in this way and use them in the garden to hold the plants in an orderly and elegant way.

Creative recycling of water bottles

Old  jugs  (even chipped, cracked or broken ones) can be recycled to become perfect  vases  for plants and flowers, to be placed on windowsills, on the ground or on old external stairs like this one.
