We all have this well-oiled routine when it comes to cleaning the fridge: we empty the shelves, we scrub the crispers, we chase away the crumbs… But one corner is often forgotten, and yet it plays a crucial role: the rubber seal on the door! Why is it so important? And above all, how to clean it properly without complicating your life? Here are our simple and effective tips.
Why do you need to clean the fridge seal?
This little soft bead around the door is not there to decorate. It ensures the refrigerator is sealed, preventing cold air from escaping and hot air from entering. But now, by dint of opening and closing, it becomes a real nest of dust, crumbs, food residues… or even mold. Result? Unpleasant odors, reduced sealing, and increased electricity consumption. Fortunately, it only takes a few simple steps to avoid all this.
Tip 1: The vinegar and toothbrush duo, your natural ally
This is the classic method that still works! Mix a tablespoon of white vinegar in 5 parts hot water. Add a splash of washing-up liquid. Dip an old toothbrush in it and gently scrub the seal, insisting on the folds.
Are the corners inaccessible? Slide a piece of paper towels around an old loyalty card (or bank card that is no longer in use) and pass it through the grooves. The result: a clean, effortless seal without harsh products.
Tip 2: Baking soda for a deep clean

For a more effective action, baking soda comes into play! Simply mix it with a little white vinegar or lemon juice to form a slightly foamy paste. Apply it with a toothbrush and leave it on for a few minutes before scrubbing.
The baking soda neutralizes bad odors and gently cleans. Again, don’t forget to pass a card wrapped in paper towels through the narrowest folds. Then rinse with a damp cloth and dry thoroughly.
Tip 3: Household alcohol, for an express refresh

No time to mix? A cloth soaked in rubbing alcohol (also known as methylated spirits) is very effective at disinfecting and shining joints quickly. Then wipe with a clean, damp cloth and dry.
Bonus tip: A few drops of lemon or eucalyptus essential oil can be added for a pleasant touch of freshness.
And for tougher cases?

If the stains persist despite your efforts, there are anti-mold cleaning sprays available in supermarkets. Choose a bleach-free formula that is suitable for food contact surfaces and follow the instructions exactly. Wear gloves to protect your hands, and of course, ventilate the room during and after use.
Once the treatment is complete, remember to rinse the joint and dry it to prevent moisture from re-establishing itself.
